How It Works

How Our Winter Gritting Service Works.

Our 4 step process for servicing your site, based on a weather forecast to help keep your site safe during winter:

01

Survey & Map Your Site

We assess your premises, identify priority areas and digitally map the surfaces to be treated.

02

Monitor Your Forecast

We monitor site-specific winter conditions, with particular attention to forecast Road Surface Temperature and the risk of frost, ice or snow.

03

Attend & Treat

When your agreed service trigger is reached, our gritting team attends and spreads salt across the mapped treatment areas.

04

Receive Your Report

After attendance, your visit is documented through the Winter Portal with timestamps, photographs, GPS information and service details.

We’ve been really impressed with the service from North East Gritters. Their team monitors the weather closely and attends when required, giving us confidence that our car parks, access roads and pedestrian areas are being looked after throughout the winter. The visit reports and photographic evidence also give us a clear record of every attendance, which is a big help from a facilities management point of view.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions.

Commercial sites should ideally be gritted before ice has a chance to form. We monitor site-specific weather forecasts and Road Surface Temperature (RST) so treatment can be scheduled in advance of freezing conditions, helping reduce the risk of ice on car parks, access roads, footpaths and other high-risk areas.

Our Automatic Service is typically triggered when the forecast Road Surface Temperature is expected to reach 0°C or below, subject to the agreed service level for your site. We also consider factors such as precipitation, frost risk and local conditions before scheduling treatment.

With our Automatic Service, we monitor the forecast and schedule gritting automatically when your agreed trigger is reached, so no daily action is required from you.

With our Permission Service, we monitor the forecast and notify your nominated contacts when treatment may be required. You then decide whether you would like us to attend, giving you greater control over individual visits and expenditure.

Before the winter season, we agree the areas that require treatment and create a site-specific gritting plan. This can include car parks, private access roads, loading bays, service yards, pedestrian routes, entrances, ramps, steps and other agreed high-risk areas.

Yes. Our teams can treat both vehicle and pedestrian areas, including footpaths, walkways, entrances, steps and ramps. Areas that cannot be safely reached by vehicle are treated manually where included within your agreed service plan.

We primarily use high-quality white rock salt for our commercial gritting services. White salt provides effective winter treatment while offering a cleaner appearance and helping reduce the dirt and staining that can be associated with traditional brown rock salt.

Yes. Completed visits are recorded through our Winter Portal, providing a clear audit trail of each attendance. Reports can include arrival and completion times, GPS information, photographs and details of the service carried out.

Yes but optional. We provide commercial snow clearance alongside our gritting services. Where heavier snowfall settles, our teams can use snow ploughs and manual clearance methods to help keep car parks, private roads, entrances and pedestrian routes accessible before re-gritting where required.

The cost of commercial gritting depends on factors such as the size of the treatment area, the amount of hand gritting required, site layout, location, salt usage and your chosen service level. We assess each site individually and provide a tailored quotation based on your requirements.

We provide commercial gritting and snow clearance across the North East and Yorkshire in locations including Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Northallerton, York, Thirsk, Harrogate, Ripon, Redcar, Newton Aycliffe, Chester-le-Street, Consett, Stanley, North Shields, South Shields and Stokesley.
